Senior Portraits for Guys: How to Show Up, Relax, and Actually Enjoy It
Let’s be honest — most senior guys don’t wake up excited about having their photo taken. It can feel awkward, stiff, or like something you’re being “made” to do. My goal at Neita Ashley Photography is simple: make your session feel natural, easy, and nothing like what you’re expecting.
First, forget the word pose. You won’t be standing frozen or forcing smiles. We work with movement, posture, and small adjustments that feel normal. Walk a little. Shift your weight. Lean. Breathe. The best images come from relaxed confidence, not perfection. You don’t have to know what to do — that’s my job.
Clothing matters more than people think. Guys photograph best in pieces that fit well and feel like them. Clean boots, starched jeans, a solid tee, a button-down, or a jacket go a long way. Logos stay minimal. If you wouldn’t wear it on a good day out, don’t wear it to your session. Comfort creates confidence on camera. When we talk ahead of time, think about your style or "vibe"--are you casual, more dressed up? What makes up most of your clothes you feel confident and good in? Head that direction!
Now for the fun part: bring what makes you you. Your truck. Your classic car. Your dog. Your horse. Your guitar. Your gear. Senior portraits aren’t about pretending — they’re about showing who you are right now. When you interact with something familiar, you stop thinking about the camera and start being yourself.
For parents: your job isn’t to force smiles — it’s to help your son show up prepared. Good sleep, clean, pressed clothes, and a relaxed mindset make more difference than anything trendy. I’ll take it from there.
After years of photographing senior guys, I know how to create strong, masculine, natural images without making anyone feel weird. We keep things respectful, efficient, and real.
Senior portraits don’t have to feel uncomfortable.
Done right, they feel confident, effortless, and true.
